O.J. Simpson has died . . . and that made us think back to the notorious slow-speed white Bronco chase, which was on EVERY TV back in June of 1994. Incredibly, that was 30 YEARS AGO.
Here are 10 other things from the spring of 1994, which really demonstrate how long ago that was. If you even remember them at all. (Looking at you, Gen Z.)
1. In March of 1994, the People’s Republic of China got its first-ever connection to . . . the Internet.
2. On April 5th, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana took his own life.
3. On May 10th, there was a solar eclipse. But before we start any ASTRONOMICAL-O.J. conspiracy theories, this was a partial, annular eclipse. It did have a similar path, stretching from Mexico up through Ohio.
4. On May 26th, Michael Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley.
5. On June 15th, the “Lion King” hit theaters. (This was THREE DAYS after the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman . . . and two days before the Bronco chase.)
6. The Number One songs in the country over this stretch were: “The Sign” by Ace of Base . . . “Bump n’ Grind” by R. Kelly . . . and “I Swear” by All-4-One.
7. The top scripted show on TV in the spring was “Home Improvement”, followed by “Seinfeld”, “Roseanne”, “Grace Under Fire”, and “Coach”. No one had seen “Friends” . . . it was still a few months away from premiering.
8. The internet got real in 1994, with the founding of both Yahoo and Amazon.com. And an entrepreneur named Gary Kremen, who founded Match.com, first registered the domain: Sex.com.
9. Major League Baseball was headed toward a players’ strike, which would cancel the World Series.
10. The biggest sensation for kids was: “ Mighty Morphin Power Rangers”.
