YANKTON, S.D. – Warmer weather is finally allowing high school golf teams to get their regular season competitions underway, and the Miller Rustlers fared well in their first tournament of the season. The Rustler boys won the team title at the Southeast South Dakota Small School Invitational Thursday, played at the Fox Run Golf Course in Yankton, finishing at 39-over par (255) for their three best scores of the day. Miller finished eight strokes ahead of Wessington Springs for the win, led by Derek Brueggeman and Oliver Fritzsche who were both in a tie for third place individually with a pair of 9-over par 81’s. Meanwhile Sully Buttes sophomore Gavin Colson earned individual medalist honors carding a 5-over 77 for the win in conditions that featured a steady breeze throughout the day. The Chargers finished fourth in the team standings overall.
Chester Area won the girls team tournament with a collective 66-over par, five strokes better than Miller, who finished a comfortable second place. Kaihlyn Anderburg and Jayce Pugh both tied for third with scores of 95 to lead the Rustlers, three shots behind medalist Cadence Olivier of Chester Area. Sydney Asmus finished seventh as well for Miller with a 97, while Olivia Larson of Sully Buttes finished ninth with a 100 to lead other area players.
Weather should improve Saturday for Sully Buttes when they play at Gettysburg, while Miller’s next tournament comes Monday at Deubrook Area.
