PIERRE – Pierre Governor girls wrestling standout Sydney Uhrig signed a National Letter of Intent Tuesday morning (May 7, 2024) to wrestle collegiately at Grand View University.
Since high school girls wrestling began in South Dakota in 2020, Uhrig has been a primary leader of a Pierre team that is so far the only school to earn a State Team Championship, winning the first three in the state’s early history of the sport. With over 125 wins, Uhrig will graduate as the current all-time winningest Governor girls wrestler, and she becomes the first female wrestler from Pierre to sign on to a college program.
Uhrig said it wasn’t her first plan to wrestle in college, but a team camp featuring a Grand View assistant coach and a subsequent visit to the Des Moines, Iowa, campus where she met some current team members convinced her to further her wrestling career. The Vikings placed fifth in last year’s NAIA National Tournament.
Uhrig plans to major in kinesiology with her eyes on a career in physical therapy.
