JUNE 12, 2024:
The Pierre City Commission has approved a change order for the Pawnee Street project.
City Engineer Nick Waters says there was an issue with the storm sewer pipe.
Commissioner Blake Barringer asked Waters if tests have been done on the new water line.
To do the Pawnee Street project, the traffic pattern by Scooters, Taco Johns and Wells Fargo had to be disrupted. Commissioner Jamie Huizenga (high-zin-ga) asked Waters how things are going on that aspect of the project.
The $350,000-plus contract includes rebuilding the street surface of the block of Pawnee between Sioux and Dakota Avenues, replacing the utilities underneath it and installing new curb and gutter.
MAY 1, 2024:
The rebuild of a section of Pawnee Street in Pierre is scheduled to start next week (May 6, 2024).
The $350,000-plus contract includes rebuilding the street surface of the block of Pawnee between Sioux and Dakota Avenues, replacing the utilities underneath it and installing new curb and gutter.
Paula Alexander is the Assistant Project Manager with Sharpe Enterprises. She says the traffic pattern by Scooters, Taco Johns and Wells Fargo will be disrupted.
Pierre Staff Engineer Caleb Huizenga says while the project is being done, the alley between Taco Johns and Scooters will be one-way traffic.
Huizenga says they’re also making accommodations for the people who live in the area so they’re able to get to and from their homes.
Huizenga says they’ll make adjustments to the traffic plan as needed.
Huizenga says temporary water lines will be installed in the area to eliminate– or at least minimize– water service disruptions. Additionally, he says the Wells Fargo ATM will not be accessible via drive through while the Pawnee Street rebuild project is being done.
SEPTEMBER 19, 2023:
The Pierre City Commission has awarded a $350,000-plus contract (to Sharpe Enterprises) to rebuild a section of Pawnee Street.
The project includes rebuilding the street surface of the block of Pawnee between Sioux and Dakota Avenues (between Scooters and Wells Fargo), replacing the utilities underneath it and installing new curb and gutter.
City Engineer Nick Waters says this was the second time the city bid the project; no bids were received during the first round. He says they took a run at getting it done in 2023, but the timing didn’t work out. Now the work is scheduled to be complete in mid-summer 2024.
AUGUST 23, 2023:
It had been on this summer’s schedule, but now a heavily traveled block of Pawnee Street in Pierre most likely won’t be upgraded until next year.
Staff Engineer Caleb Huizenga says that’s if the city gets a bid to do the work.
Earlier this year Pierre city officials had been hoping some contractors’ schedules would open up as we got closer to fall, but Huizenga says that hasn’t been the case.
The project includes rebuilding the street surface of the block of Pawnee between Sioux and Dakota Avenues (between Scooters and Wells Fargo), replacing the utilities underneath it and installing new curb and gutter.
Bids are due September 21, 2023. If bids come back favorably, the work will be completed by mid-July 2024.
JULY 12, 2023:
The Pierre City Commission has approved a request to bid the rebuilding of one block of Pawnee Street and to replace the utilities underneath it.
As part of the project, the block of Pawnee located between Sioux and Dakota Avenues (between Scooters and Wells Fargo), will also receive new curb and gutter.
John Childs, City Engineer, says that he hopes the late season bid will work in the City’s favor.
“Typically, we bid these types of projects earlier in the season,” said Childs. “In talking with local contractors, we learned most didn’t have much spring and early summer capacity remaining. We believe some contractor opportunity opens up as we get closer to fall.”
Bids are due July 27, 2023. If bids come back favorably, the work will be completed in early November.
