HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — New details from federal investigations into the crash of a gasoline delivery truck that destroyed an I-95 bridge in Philadelphia a year ago says gasoline spilled out from an unsecured hatch on the top of the tanker. The crash and subsequent fire and explosions in June 2023 killed the driver and closed down the roadway. Video evidence shows the cover to a 16-inch “manhole” on the tanker was open when driver Nathan Moody arrived at a Wilmington, Delaware, terminal to refill the tank. The video obtained by federal investigators shows it was still not properly secured when he drove away to deliver it to a convenience store.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The driver of a tanker truck hauling gasoline lost control on a curved off-ramp on Interstate 95, causing the truck to flip and catch fire, leading to the collapse of the northbound lanes in early June. This is according to a preliminary report from federal safety officials. The National Transportation Safety Board’s brief report released Thursday (June 29, 2023) outlined what happened on June 11. A vehicle was hauling 8,500 gallons of gasoline from Wilmington, Delaware, to a gas station located on Oxford Avenue in Philadelphia when it crashed and caught fire on the off-ramp, killing the driver and damaging a section of the interstate.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Interstate 95 is set to reopen to traffic less than two weeks after a deadly collapse in Philadelphia shut down a heavily traveled stretch of the East Coast’s main north-south highway. Crews worked around the clock and are poised to finish ahead of schedule. The interim six-lane roadway is set to reopen at noon Friday (June 23, 2023). It will serve motorists during construction of a permanent bridge. An elevated section of I-95 collapsed June 11 after a tractor-trailer hauling gasoline flipped on an off-ramp and caught fire. The driver was killed. The closure snarled traffic in and around Philadelphia and threatened to raise the cost of consumer goods as truckers detoured around the area.

UNDATED (AP)- Gov. Josh Shapiro says crews will work 24 hours a day in Philadelphia to replace a collapsed section of an important East Coast highway, as investigators look into why a truck hauling gasoline crashed, igniting a fire. However, Shapiro on Wednesday wouldn’t estimate how long it’ll take to get traffic flowing again. Shapiro says crews will use fill to build up the roadway to surface level to get traffic flowing, then build a new bridge next to it to reroute traffic so that the exit ramp can be restored. Police say the driver died early Sunday (June 11, 2023) when his truck lost control in the underpass.
JUNE 12, 2023, UPDATE:
UNDATED (AP)- State and federal investigators Monday (June 12, 2023) were trying to find out why a tanker fire collapsed a section of the East Coast’s main north-south highway, throwing hundreds of thousands of morning commutes into chaos and disrupting commerce for untold numbers of businesses. I-95 will be closed in both directions for weeks at the start of summer travel season. Motorists should expect extensive delays and street closures and avoid the northeast corner of the sixth-large city in the country, transportation officials said. The accident also disrupted the car route from Canada to Florida through the Boston, New York and Washington metropolitan areas, increasing Americans’ dependence on air travel and the interstate rail network.
JUNE 12, 2023:
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Drivers have started longer commutes after an elevated section of Interstate 95 collapsed in Philadelphia following damage caused by a tanker truck carrying flammable cargo catching fire. Sunday’s (June 11, 2023) blaze closed a heavily traveled segment of the East Coast’s main north-south highway indefinitely. Newscasts warned of traffic nightmares Monday and gave advice on detours, urging drivers to take more time to travel. Officials said the tanker was carrying a petroleum product, possibly hundreds of gallons of gasoline. A massive concrete slab fell from I-95 onto the road below. There were no reports of injuries.
