DENVER (AP) — The shooter who killed five people and injured 19 others at a nightclub in Colorado Springs has pleaded guilty to 50 federal hate crimes. Anderson Lee Aldrich admitted to the hate crimes and was sentenced to 55 life terms on Tuesday (June 18, 2024), but once again declined to apologize or say anything to the victims’ families. Aldrich is already serving life in prison after pleading to state charges in the 2022 shooting. Federal prosecutors described how premeditated hate and bias fueled the attack at Club Q — a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ people in the mostly conservative city. The death penalty was taken off the table in the plea deal.

DECEMBER 9, 2022:
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The Colorado Springs gay nightclub shooter had charges dropped in a 2021 bomb threat case after family members who were terrorized in the incident refused to cooperate. That’s according to the district attorney and court documents unsealed Thursday (Dec. 8, 2022). The documents say the charges were dropped despite warnings from other relatives that said Anderson Lee Aldrich was “certain” to hurt or kill a set of grandparents if freed. The district attorney said Aldrich tried to reclaim guns that were seized after the threat, but authorities did not return the weapons. The district attorney spoke hours after a judge unsealed the prior case.
