JUNE 28, 2024:
Two people suffered fatal injuries in a two-vehicle crash eight miles south of Freeman Monday afternoon (June 24, 2024, 2:15pm).
Preliminary crash information indicates 51 year old Patrick L. Bauder of Scotland, SD, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet pickup northbound on US Highway 81 at the junction of US highway 18. At the same time, a 2005 Peterbilt tractor/trailer driven by 27 year old Sean M. Lockhorst of Monroe, SD, was traveling southbound at the same intersection.
Bauder failed to yield as he turned west onto US 18 and both vehicles collided in the intersection, coming to rest in the southwest ditch of the junction. Bauder and his passenger, 11 year old Jackson P. Bauder of Scotland, were not wearing seatbelts and both were fatally injured in the crash. Lockhorst also was not wearing his seatbelt but was not injured.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

The names of the persons involved have not been released pending notification of family members.
Preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a 2002 Chevrolet pickup was traveling northbound on US Highway 81 at the junction of US highway 18. At the same time, a 2005 Peterbilt tractor/trailer was traveling southbound at the same intersection.
The driver of the pickup failed to yield as he turned west onto US 18 and both vehicles collided in the intersection, coming to rest in the southwest ditch of the junction. The driver and passenger in the pickup were not wearing seatbelts and both were fatally injured in the crash. The driver of the semi also was not wearing his seatbelt and was not injured.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
