South Dakota inventory of all hogs and pigs on June 1, 2024, was 2.28 million head, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. This was up 4% from June 1, 2023, but unchanged from March 1, 2024.
Breeding hog inventory, at 335,000 head, was up 6% from June 1, 2023, and up 3% from last quarter. Market hog inventory, at 1.95 million head, was up 3% from last year, but down 1% from last quarter.
The March – May 2024 South Dakota pig crop, at a record high 2.12 million head, was up 16% from 2023. Sows farrowed during the period totaled 164,000 head, up 16% from last year.
The average pigs saved per litter was 12.90 for the March – May period, compared to 12.90 last year.
South Dakota hog producers intend to farrow 170,000 sows during the June – August 2024 quarter, up 15% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago. Intended farrowings for September – November 2024 are 170,000 sows, up 10% from the actual farrowings during the same period a year ago.
