The Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department has been called to two separate fires this week– one caused by lightning and the other by fireworks.
Fire Chief Justin Jones says the bale fire call to a location several miles south of Fort Pierre came Monday night (July 1, 2024) around 7pm.
Hot fireworks thrown into a garbage can caused a fire around 4am today (July 3, 2024) in Fort Pierre. Jones says the garbage can was pushed up alongside a garage in the 100 block of S. 3rd Street.
Jones reminds people to pay attention when discharging fireworks.
The National Safety Council recommends soaking fireworks in water before throwing them into a garbage can or dumpster.
