Senators voted 25-9 Monday (Feb.10, 2025) to crack down on street racing in South Dakota.
Senate Bill 116 would make it illegal to do burnouts, drag races or block streets for racing. Those violating the law could face jail time.
Sioux Falls officials asked for the bill to combat motorcycle and car racing on some of the city’s busiest streets and near baseball fields. However, some lawmakers worry the bill could hurt tourism, especially in Sturgis.
Sen. Helene Duhamel of Rapid City said most of what this bill talks about happens all year long in western South Dakota.
The bill lists what activities count as illegal racing and says law enforcement would need to prove drivers were racing, not just speeding.
The bill now moves to the House for more debate.
