Another South Dakotan is headed to the NFL after Oacoma’s Nash Hutmacher signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. Hutmacher, who stands 6-4 and weigth 314 lbs. started all 13 games for Nebraska in 2024. In those 13 games, he recorded 24 tackles including 4.0 TFL’s and 2.0 sacks. Thanks to his dominant play upfront, Hutmacher earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention his junior and senior years for the Huskers.
Hutmacher was an anchor for Nebraska in his collegiate career, but was maybe more dominant on the wrestling mat than he was on the gridiron. Hutmacher won the state title all four of his high school years at the 285 lb. weight class. Some even regard Hutmacher as one of the best wrestlers this state has ever seen.
His wrestling experience will serve him well in the league as many of the techniques used on the mat will translate to defensive line. He also joins an immediate contender with the Ravens who lost by two-points to the Bills in the divisional round of the playoffs a season ago.
NFL analyst Lance Zierlein said about Hutmacher: “With broad hips, a barrel chest and short arms, Hutmacher is built for combat in tight spaces. He’s a leverage-based nose tackle who can play under the pads of single blocks and slow down double-teams, but his lack of length makes him more of a block fighter than block controller. He can bully his way into the backfield if he finds an edge but does not have enough rush talent by NFL standards. Hutmacher’s toughness and power could give him a chance of making a roster as a backup nose tackle.”
