This May, in celebration of National Beef Month, Feeding South Dakota invites community members to be part of a movement built on compassion, community, and gratitude. The organization’s Beef It Up, South Dakota campaign honors the hands that raise our food and helps fill the plates of families facing hunger.
Donations made to Feeding South Dakota throughout the month will directly support the purchase of nutritious beef protein that will be distributed across the state.
“Protein-rich foods like beef are a vital part of a balanced diet, and something we know about here in South Dakota,” stated Lori Dykstra, CEO of Feeding South Dakota. “That’s why National Beef Month is the right time to give this gift.”
Hunger is Closer Than You Think:
- 1 in 9 South Dakotans don’t know where their next meal will come from — many in rural communities where agriculture is a way of life.
- When budgets tighten, protein and fresh produce are often the first sacrifices families make.
- Ground beef is one of the most requested items by families and food pantries across the state.
Recent changes at the federal level have impacted Feeding South Dakota, causing a 14% reduction in their food inventory. Eleven loads of food items, including protein items, were cancelled by the USDA.
“This campaign couldn’t come at a better time,” Dykstra shared. “More people are seeking food assistance through our programs and partners, and we need support from our communities to help us replenish the food that we were planning to receive.”
The food bank is counting on South Dakotans to do what they’ve always done in the face of rising need: stand together. When protein-rich foods like beef are given, it’s more than a meal — it’s strength for a family, nourishment for a child, and hope for an entire community.
