Ten new pieces of art have been purchased for South Dakota’s public art collection through the Art for State Buildings program.
A five-member advisory committee for the South Dakota Arts Council reviewed 80 purchase proposals from 65 different artists. Pieces acquired this year will be installed for public display later this summer.
The new purchases are:
- Charlene Brown, Pierre, “Thin Ice, Take II,” oil;
- Susan Hartenhoff Haygood, Garretson, “House of Clouds,” oil;
- Roger Broer, Hill City, “Presence of a Hero,” monotype print;
- Allison Russell, Mitchell, “Sunrise at Sylvan,” photograph;
- Emma Rivers, Rapid City, “The Space Between,” mixed media;
- Donald Montileaux, Rapid City, “Morning Thunder,” mixed media;
- Hector Curriel, Sioux Falls, “The Last Battle,” acrylic on canvas;
- Mecca Rutherford, Sioux Falls, “Settling In,” oil on canvas;
- DeVee Dietz, Sturgis, “Spring Sensations,” mixed media; and
- Jennifer Stone, Watertown, “Chasing the Sun,” watercolor.
The advisory committee based their decisions on set criteria including: quality of the work and relevance to the artist’s career; the artwork’s relevance to South Dakota environment, history, heritage or culture; professional experience of the artist; durability and safety, as required for public artworks and viewers.
The Art For State Buildings program was established in 2008 by the South Dakota State Legislature for the purpose of creating a permanent state art collection showcasing South Dakota artists and artwork. The State Art Collection is displayed in publicly accessible areas of state government buildings located throughout the capital city of Pierre. The South Dakota Arts Council manages the collection and the program. Purchase proposals are accepted on an annual basis.
