July 21, 2025:
Cleanup efforts continue in parts of Pierre hit by 80+ mph winds as part of a storm that came through last week (July 15, 2025).
City Commissioner Todd Johnson says city crews have cleared public streets and alleys, but individuals are responsible for clearing private property.
Johnson says Pierre residents with questions can contact the Solid Waste Facility.
Pierre residential utility customers can use their previously issued access cards to enter the Yard Waste Drop-Off Site, free of charge, any time of day or night. Pierre residential utility customers who haven’t previously had a key card may obtain one from the office at the Solid Waste Facility or from City Hall. If you forget your card, check in at the Solid Waste Facility office and they’ll find you on their list.
Pierre residential utility customers who have a lost or damaged key card may purchase a new one at the Solid Waste Facility or from City Hall at a cost of $25.
For larger items, Pierre residential utility customers received the annual solid waste free load coupon with their March utility bill. The coupons are valid through November 2025 and are intended to clear large items out of yards, garages and homes. Customers who receive their utility bill electronically are still entitled to a coupon. The staff at the Solid Waste Facility maintains a list of those customers and will issue a coupon at the time of disposal.
Additionally, the solid waste department offers free paint swap or household cleaner swap programs. Crushed asphalt and yard compost can be purchased at the facility.

July 15, 2025:
The National Weather Service says a thunderstorm passed through Pierre around 8pm Monday (July 14, 2025) and caused damage to trees and structures.
Meteorologist Renee Wise says there was a sudden 80+mph gust of wind as the thunderstorm broke apart.
Many people can picture what it looks like when a building collapses and Wise says it’s much the same thing when a storm collapses.
Most of the damage reported so far has been in the east and north parts of Pierre.
