Two teams turning heads around central South Dakota are Highmore-Harrold girls basketball and the Stanley County boys. After their wins against each other in a split, boys and girls doubleheader, they both continue their blistering starts improving on undefeated records.
The Lady Pirates improved to 7-0 with their 56-19 victory over the Stanley County Lady Buffaloes. In the first quarter, both teams battled tough leading to a 10-6 score, but the Lady Pirates defense dug in, holding the Lady Buffaloes scoreless in the second quarter and jumping out to a 29-6 halftime score. Highmore-Harrold would never turn back, seeing three of their players end up in double-digits. Whitney Baloun finished with 10, Jada Baloun finished with 14 and Autumn Fallis finishing with 13. The Lady Pirates will face off with the 0-6 Sully Buttes Chargers in their next contest.
Stanley County boys were playing short-handed, missing key players in Weston Prince and Tegyn Breitag. However, they had more than enough talent on the bench to make up for it as they hung 60 on the Pirates winning 60-27. This win improves the Buffaloes to 5-0, their best start since the 2002-03 season. After a slow night in his last game, Eddie Duffy exploded for 25 points, doing what he does best, hitting shots outside the arc and finishing with four made threes. He also had some savvy work inside the arc to propel him to be the leading scorer in the game. Another catalyst for Stanley County in this hot start has been Paxton Deal who finished with 17.
The Stanley County boys will carry their undefeated record into their Thursday contest with McLaughlin.
