There were a lot of eyes on Tuesday night’s matchup between Stanley County and Sully Buttes as the had been on a collision course since they both got off to incredibly hot starts to the 2025-26 season. Sully Buttes came out of the gates winning their first five games of the season, but after an injury to one of their key players in Wesley Wittler, they dropped their last two before their contest with the Buffaloes.
Stanley County also got out to one of their best starts over the last few years, carrying an undefeated record into the Jones County Invitational before losing in the championship game. So, many around the state were looking forward to seeing how these two stacked up with each other. Many expected a close, offensive battle and that’s exactly what we got.
The Chargers came out early and took a slim lead (15-12) into the start of the second quarter when Stanley County turned on the offensive switches and started seeing shots fall. Stanley County jumped out to a lead of their own at the end of the first half, 31-30, as the game saw two players score double-digits in the first half with Eddie Duffy scoring 11 for Stanley County and Wittler with 13.
The second half would be much like the first, leads shifting back and forth, but Sully Buttes seemed to hit shots when they needed them most down the stretch as they were able to salt away the 69-63 victory on the road.
Even though Wittler led both teams in scoring with 27, Jett Yackley made an undeniable impact on this game. His sharp shooting from the outside was key as he knocked down three 3’s, but his perfect night from the free throw line was even more important in the long run. Yackley’s all-around performance was strong enough to earn Player of the Game honors.
Stanley County saw three Buffs finish in double-digits, Duffy scoring 22, Paxton Deal scoring 15 and Teegyn Breitag with 14.
Sully Buttes picks up win and improves to 8-3 on the year while Stanley County falls to 10-2.
