After Lyman girl’s basketball dropped just their second game of the season earlier this week, they knew a strong performance in their last contest before postseason play would be just the cure. However, they knew it would not come easy as they would have to go on the road to take on a Jones County Lady Coyote squad who had won their last eight games in a row and boasting at 13-4 record. After the Raiders Tuesday night defeat to Bennett County that finished 76-58, Cody Volmer’s team was determined to make a statement, and make a statement they.
In front of a packed house inside of Harold Thune Auditorium, the first quarter looked like the game was shaping up to be a back-and-forth bout. Lyman carried a one-possession, 11-8 lead into the second quarter, and that’s when the game flipped.
Lyman would outscore the Lady Coyotes 18-5 in the second frame taking a 29-13 lead into the halftime break with lone Lyman senior Mak Scott already in double-digits with 10.
Jones County’s defense picked up after the break, but Lyman was intent on carrying their second quarter momentum into the second half. They went on to outscore the Coyotes again 13-4 stretching out the advantage to 42-17 heading into the fourth. Much to the Coyotes credit, they did not throw in the towel and responded with a 17-point fourth quarter. Though Lyman had already pulled the game out of reach.
Lyman’s defense was able to keep all five scorers for Jones County in single digits, a feat in its own against a Coyotes team that had been lighting up the scoreboard throughout the last month. The Lady Coyotes were led by Sunny Valburg who scored 8 points and Aubrey Tucker who finished with seven.
For the Raiders, the Scott sisters combined for 38 of the Raiders 57 points, Mak finishing with 20 and Jordyn with 18. Sophomore Bree Smart also finished in double-digits tallying 10.
Both team’s regular seasons are now officially in the books as they look ahead to regional play coming up as Jones County will likely sit as the second-seed in region 7B while Lyman secured the top of region 5B a few games back.
Jones County finished their regular season in a very impressive way, winning 8 of their last 9 and finishing 13-5. Even more impressive is the fact they opened their season losing two of their first three. Lyman finished their regular season boasting an 18-2 record.
