Two good teams in the Chamberlain Cubs and the Miller Rustlers played in arguably the game of the night around the state on KPLO Tuesday night. A back-and-forth affair that never strayed further than a few points difference unfolded with a matchup against #1-seed Stanley County on Friday night on the line.
Chamberlain grabbed a two-point, 8-6 lead at the end of one, which quickly shifted in favor of the Rustlers who outscored the Cubs by two to tie it up at 22 going to the halftime break. A few things were certain, this was going to be an exciting finish, and that Chamberlain freshman Miles Thompson was the real deal. Thompson, who scored 14 in the first half with three made threes, added another 14 in the second half and overtime period as the two teams swung back and forth consistently.
Miller covered up a three-point deficit in the fourth quarter to send it to extra time, but Chamberlain would not be denied. The Cubs defense shutout Miller and gutted out the 58-49 OT victory.
Chamberlain was led by Thompson who finished with 28, also getting 11 from Riddik Big Eagle. In the loss, Miller got a few outstanding performances including Will Resel who scored 18 and Isaak Hunter who finished with 16.
The Cubs now get a rematch with the Buffaloes who beat them in Chamberlain earlier this season 69-57. The final score, however, was a bit misleading as Chamberlain at had the game within two possessions late in the ballgame. The two will play Friday night on KGFX, coverage beginning at 6:30 PM CT and tip-off at 7:00 PM. You can also watch that game live on DRGnews.com/KGFX
