PIERRE, S.D. — The City of Pierre is pleased to announce the seasonal opening of Hillsview Golf Course, with the
driving range opening on March 25, 2026, and the full golf course opening on March 27, 2026.
Following a mild winter, course conditions are shaping up well for an early start to the season.
“I think we are going to come out pretty decent this year,” said Jordan Steiner, Golf Superintendent. “We had a very
mild winter with limited snow and moisture, which can sometimes create concerns for winter kill and desiccation.
However, I’ve been very impressed with how the course is waking up, and I think we are going to be just fine.”
Golfers can expect strong early-season conditions.
“In my 12 years of golf maintenance, I would say the conditions for March golf at Hillsview are some of the best I’ve
seen, despite the lack of snow and moisture,” Steiner added.
“I’ve spent a fair amount of time out at Hillsview over the years, and it’s one of those places where you can slow
down a bit, catch up with friends, and just enjoy being outside. Some days the score’s better than others, but it’s
always a good day to be out there,” says Mayor Steve Harding
Hillsview Golf Course is an 18-hole facility featuring 6,735 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The
course includes a driving range, two practice putting greens, and a short game chipping area, offering opportunities
for players of all skill levels to practice and improve their game.
Set along the Missouri River, the course is known for its scenic views and unique layout. The front nine features
wider fairways with water hazards, while the back nine challenges golfers with more narrow, tree-lined fairways that
require precision. Large greens, sand bunkers, and South Dakota winds add to the course’s distinctive play.
Originally designed by Charles Maddox and opened in 1965, the course was later redesigned by Ron Farris in
2001, with improvements including new greens, enhanced drainage, and floodplain corrections.
In addition to course conditions, golfers will notice an upgrade this season with the transition to an all-electric golf
cart fleet. The conversion from gas-powered carts is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, offering a
quieter and more environmentally friendly experience.
“It takes a team to get the course ready each season. We’ve had a few setbacks this spring, but the crew rallied
and we will be ready to open on time,” Steiner said. “A huge thank you to Rex Ryckman, Chad Jensen, and Keith
Stanek for their work getting everything ready for golfers.”
Golfers can also take advantage of the Hillsview Pro Shop, which offers a selection of golf balls, gloves, apparel,
and equipment, along with everyday essentials to get players ready for their round. The on-site restaurant provides
a place to enjoy food and refreshments before or after play.
Hillsview Golf Course invites residents and visitors to take advantage of the early opening and enjoy one of Pierre’s
premier recreational amenities.
