Pierre Governors athletic weekend recap

The Pierre Governors had a full schedule this weekend across their athletic programs including Sofbtall, Baseball and Tennis. Here is a quick rundown of what the weekend looked like for the Govs:

Governors Tennis:

Pierre tennis competed late last week into the weekend in the Governors invite and saw some great finishes. The best came from Marty Blanchette who dominated his flight and took the championship. Blanchette went undefeated in his singles sessions, winning every single set and ultimately running away with the title. In flight two, Noah Lueking was the consolation champion after an early loss. Brady Lowery also had an outstanding day, earning wins all the way to the final match before taking second place. View the rest of the finishes below!

Governors Baseball:

The Govs finished up their regular season on Saturday as one of the hottest teams in high school baseball. After a rocky start, the Govs ripped off a double-digit win streak through the heart of their season to propel them up the standings charts. It was a full team effort to get to that point, too. Timely hitting when needed and shutdown pitching all culminating to a 20-6 record going into Saturday’s doubleheader.

Pierre would drop both games on Saturday, however. Dropping game one 5-4 and game two 5-1 to Jefferson.

On the bright side, some of their own in Hudson Shaffer, Bridger Babcock and Jonathan Neuharth were awarded with South Dakota Baseball Association’s Academic All-State Awards.

Now the Governors look to the postseason which will begin on Friday. The Govs will host Mitchell in a best-of-three series.

Governors Track & Field:

The Pierre track and field teams traveled to Aberdeen for a meet involving 10 teams, including Huron, Watertown, and Aberdeen Central. The Governors had many great performances including 12 event champions, and many personal records broken. See results below:

The next meet is on Tuesday, May 12^th at Hollister Field starting with the Senior Recognition at noon.

Governor Softball:

The Govs hosted two doubleheaders Friday and Saturday against four of the top teams in the classification hoping to pull at least one upset. Unfortunately for the Governors, that would not be the case as the Sioux Falls talent would prove to be simply too tough. Friday would seee an 11-3 loss to Sioux Falls Lincoln after a few miscues in the field assisted a couple huge innings for Lincoln. Game two the Govs would fall to arguably the best team in the state in Sioux Falls Jefferson who kept their record unblemished with a 13-0 victory to move them to 14-0 on the season.

On Saturday, the Govs would again face tough opponents in Roosevelt and Washington. Game one the Govs fell 9-2 to Roosevelt who moved to 9-6 after the victory. The second loss came to Washington (9-0), another top team in the state who improved their record to 15-2.

The Govs will turn around quickly and go on the road to face off with 10-3 Brandon Valley before coming home to take on Mitchell on Thursday. The Kernels sit at 3-10 on the year, and that game will be broadcast on River 92.7 with Brian Oakland on the call. Friday, the Governors will go on the road to take on 4-4 Sturgis.
