A Liberty Tree Planting Ceremony is scheduled to take place this morning (May 22, 2026, at 10am) at the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.
The America’s 250th South Dakota Commission, in partnership with the South Dakota Nursery & Landscape Association, will plant the tree at the hill just north of the Cultural Heritage Center building.
The event is another celebration of the United States turning 250 years old this year.
The original Liberty Tree stood in Boston and served as a community gathering spot and focal point for political discourse. During the War for Independence, the British Loyalists chopped it down, but other towns planted their own Liberty Trees from a variety of the elm species.
