CASPER, Wyo. – The Oahe Zap battled back from multiple deficits but came up just short in heartbreaking fashion, falling 9-8 to the Casper Spuds on Saturday in Casper, Wyoming. The game ended on the final play of the night when a defensive miscue in the bottom of the ninth allowed the winning run to cross the plate.
Casper jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before adding another run in the third to make it 3-0. The Zap continued to chip away and found their biggest offensive spark in the sixth inning. Connor Goldberg launched a three-run home run to right field to cap a four-run frame, while Augie Goethals added an RBI groundout to pull Oahe within striking distance at 6-4.
Refusing to quit, the Zap rallied again in the ninth. Taking advantage of two Casper errors and a clutch RBI groundout from Dillon Bowie, Oahe erased the deficit and tied the game at 8-8, setting up a dramatic finish.
The Spuds answered in the bottom half of the inning, however, as another error allowed the winning run to score and handed Oahe a tough one-run loss.
Ty Farwell led the Zap offense with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, while Gavin Fraser added two hits. Goldberg drove in a team-high three runs with his sixth-inning blast. Cy Taylor showed patience at the plate, drawing two of Oahe’s seven walks.
River Walters made the start for the Zap, working five innings while allowing six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Oahe finished with nine hits, but Casper’s 13-hit attack proved just enough to edge out the victory.
The Zap will look to bounce back tonight when they wrap up their road trip against the Casper Spuds. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. MT.
