Aug. 10, 2026:
Two people from Colorado died Thursday (Aug. 6, 2026) in a two-vehicle crash four miles east of Deadwood, South Dakota.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates the driver of a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 14A near mile marker 47. At the same time, Shawn Lee Rector, the driver of a 2020 Harley Davidson Street Glide, was traveling east and failed to negotiate a turn. The Harley Davidson crossed into the westbound lanes and collided with the Jeep. Both Rector and his passenger sustained fatal injuries. One of the Jeep’s passengers, Kirk August Miller, sustained minor injuries.
U.S. Highway 14A was closed for approximately three hours.
The investigation is ongoing.
The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

Passenger 2a: Kirk August Miller, 67-year-old male from Lead, South Dakota, minor injuries

Passenger 2b: Tracy Hamilton Miller, 59-year-old female from Lead, South Dakota, no injuries

Two people from Colorado died Thursday (Aug. 6, 2026) in a two-vehicle crash four miles east of Deadwood, South Dakota.
Names of the those involved have not been released pending notification of family members.
Preliminary crash information from the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates the driver of a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee– a 15 year old female from Sturgis– was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 14A near mile marker 47. At the same time, the driver of a 2020 Harley Davidson Street Glide– a 59 year old male from Frederick, Colorado,– was traveling east and failed to negotiate a turn. The Harley Davidson crossed into the westbound lanes and collided with the Jeep. Both the driver and passenger of the Harley Davidson– a 54 year old woman from Frederick, CO,– sustained fatal injuries. Neither were wearing a helmet.
One of the Jeep’s passengers, a 67 year old man from Lead, sustained minor injuries.
U.S. Highway 14A was closed for approximately three hours.
The investigation is ongoing.
