The City of Pierre is reminding residents to help keep alleyways clear of obstructions.
Alleys are public traffic paths that are not intended for long-term storage or parking. Items such as vehicles, trailers, construction materials, firewood, landscaping supplies and other personal property should be kept on private property, not in the public right-of-way.
Pierre city officials say even if something seems out of the way, it can create challenges for garbage trucks, utility crews, delivery services, emergency responders and neighboring property owners who rely on alley access. Keeping alleys clear also means keeping vegetation under control. Property owners are responsible for maintaining weeds and grass along their property, including areas adjacent to public alleys. Overgrown vegetation can reduce visibility, limit access for City equipment, and create unnecessary maintenance and safety concerns.
By keeping personal items on private property and maintaining vegetation along alleyways, residents help improve safety, protect public infrastructure and ensure the essential services Pierre depends on can continue without interruption.
