The Pierre Governor football team scored five times in the second quarter to run away from Aberdeen Central in a 42-14 win Friday night at Phil Trautner Stadium at Hollister Field. Things started out as expected for the heavily favored Govs with a score on the game’s first drive, after a good return of the opening kick and a 36-yard run from quarterback Jerren Deal had them quickly to the Aberdeen 12-yard line. But it took a 5-yard TD pass from Deal to Cooper Terwilliger on 4th down to finally punch it in for the opening score. The Golden Eagles didn’t score on their opening drive, but they did move the ball to the Pierre 37 before punting and pinning the Govs at their own 1-yard line. After a Pierre punt into the wind from their own red zone, the Eagles capped a short scoring drive with a Porter Lozenski TD run to even the score at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter offered a change of direction for the Governors, and when they played with a breeze in their favor, the game quickly changed complexion as Pierre scored quickly while their defense stymied the Eagles all the way to halftime. Porter Hunsley scored on a 19-yard run and Deal hit Carter Shiefelbein on a 1-play scoring drive from 45 yards for a 21-7 lead. A Tucker Swenson interception gave Pierre
the ball again quickly, which led to a second Porter Hunsley touchdown run from three yards out. Then after another quick stop and punt, Deal and Schiefelbein connected again for a 64-yard score and a 35-7 lead. Deal fed Hunsley on a 6-yard pitch pass with under two minutes left in the half for a 42-7 lead at the break. Mercy rule timing then applied in the second half, as Pierre played their second string throughout. The Eagles provided the only scoring of the half with a 7-yard run from Jackson Dargatz in the fourth quarter. Pierre totaled just over 400 yards of offense in the win as Deal threw for four scores and Hunsley scored three overall.
