PIERRE, S.D. – The City of Pierre’s Deer Management Task Force has determined there is no need for a deer harvest within city limits this year.
The decision follows a report from Pierre’s Animal Control Officer Farley Zuber, who shared recent data on deer-related incidents and observations.
“So far in 2026, there have been 11 vehicle crashes involving deer within Pierre city limits, compared to 13 at this time last year,” said Zuber. “We’ve also received 2 deer-related complaints in 2026, compared to 3 in 2025.”
Additionally, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department reports that deer populations, especially along the Missouri River corridor, have been impacted by Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD), contributing to a lower overall population.
Established in 2007, the group helps guide the City’s urban deer management program.
