Pierre city crews have installed buoys and warning signs on the fishing piers at Steamboat Park.
Fire Chief Ian Paul says the fishing piers are a popular recreation area. With sustained high water levels in Lake Sharpe, he says the city thought it important to put additional safety measures in place.
The signs warning of strong currents and advise people not to swim in that specific area. The safety buoys can be thrown to someone who may have fallen in the water.
Chief Paul says they’ve had buoys along the fishing piers in the past, but they were either destroyed or stolen. He says they hope community members are more respectful of the property this time.
If you do see someone vandalizing the new features, report the incident to local police by calling 773.7410 with a description of the individual/s involved.
