Ronald Harland Krogman, 86, of Pierre, SD passed away peacefully at his daughters’ home on June 3, 2022. Ronald’s service will be at 3:30pm on Thursday, June 9th at the Louie Krogman Barn with visitation for one hour prior. He will be laid to rest at the Krogman Family Cemetery.
Ronald Harland Krogman was born July 22, 1935 in Pierre, SD, to Louie and Lillian (Paulsen) Krogman. Ronald grew up on the Louie Krogman Ranch south of White River, SD and attended school in White River where he graduated in 1955. Ronald often spoke about the large horse drives where he would lead the way to Murdo or Valentine and the sold colts would be loaded into boxcars for railway transport. He would describe the many nights of sleeping on the prairie under trees while spending days building fences on the ranch, working cattle and breaking horses to ride.
On July 24, 1955 Ronald married his high school sweetheart Janet Jeannine Jensen at the Methodist Church in White River, SD. They started their life together on the Louie Krogman Ranch along the Little White River. Ronald worked on the family ranch raising cattle and horses for five years. It was there that they began their family with the birth of their first child, Melinda (Lindy) Lee.
Ronald continued to help his father until the couple moved to the old Peterson place where the Cut Meat Creek and the Little White River join. At that time, they expanded their family raising Janel Kay, Todd Jody and Dana Marae. Ronald spent numerous hours teaching the sport of rodeo and working the family ranch.
In 1987, Ronald and Janet moved to town (White River) where Dana attended school. Ronald changed his career to be a craftsman, welder and jack-of-all-trades. He could fix or build just about anything. If there was a way, Ronald had the determination and will to build it. One of his pride buildings was the horse barn he built on the Ranch.
After losing his wife Janet to cancer in 2006, he kept the house for a few years before deciding to move in with his daughter Janel. Ronald spent his winters at Pierre and his summers at the ranch living in his camper. The ranch meant the world to Ronald. He enjoyed fixing up the barn, repairing the many break downs that the brothers brought to his attention, mentoring, and handing out orders to anyone that would listen.
All his life, he stayed involved with the Krogman Quarter Horse Ranch breeding operation. In 2009, Ronald was honored by the American Quarter Horse Association for 50 years of breeding horses. Horses were always on his mind and the love of his life, he lived and breathed them.
When his health began to fail, he spent most of his time at Janel’s. He enjoyed working in the garage making wooden spoons, forks and various items from wood or metal. Ronald always enjoyed planning and helping with the garden.
Ronald is survived by his children Janel Krogman (Robert Echols) of Pierre, SD, Todd (Aimee) Krogman of Grandview, TX and Dana Krogman of Freeman, SD: three sisters Dorothy Krogman, Barbetta Krogman, Lorena (Gene) Hight; four brothers Stanley Krogman, Casey (Ida) Krogman, Steve (Leigh) Krogman and Neil (Kristi) Krogman all of White River; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren and two great grandsons on the way.
He is preceded in death by his parents Louie and Lillian (Paulsen) Krogman, stepmother Eunice Krogman, wife Janet (Jensen) Krogman, daughter Melinda (Lindy) Krogman and grandchild Lane Krogman.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be chosen and can be sent to: 2940 Kingsway Rd, Pierre, SD 57501.
