Murdo Man Sentenced for Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury

PIERRE – US Attorney Ron Parsons announced today that a Murdo man has been sentenced in connection to a case involving Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. 20-year-old Dane Menard was sentenced to two years and six months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.
The conviction stems from an incident that occurred in an area of Mellette County, South Dakota, that is part of the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation. In March of 2025, Menard struck a man with his vehicle in the driveway of a residence near White River. The victim was hospitalized with injuries that included a broken arm and broken ankle.
This matter was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian country be prosecuted in federal court as opposed to State court.
