MAPLE GROVE, MN – Post 8 picked up its first win at the Gopher Classic Saturday, holding off Omaha Westside (NE), 6-5. Then, the Eights were beaten by Maple Grove (MN), 6-1.
Jonny Lyons had two RBI singles, Bennett Dean hit a two-run single and Jett Zabel had an RBI single as Post 8 built a 6-1 lead after three and a half innings. Omaha Westside then scored three runs in the fifth inning and another in the seventh. Brecken Krueger won, allowing seven hits in six innings. Jack Merkwan held on for the save after allowing the seventh-inning run on a wild pitch. Merkwan, with the tying and winning runs on base, then retired Anthony Rezac on a ground ball to end the game.
Against Maple Grove, Gary Nedved gave Post 8 (13-19) a first-inning lead with an RBI single. Maple Grove then scored their six runs in their first four innings to run away with the game. Connor Bruce pitched a complete game for the Eights.
