Keaton Jerome Vermillion (Matho’ Maza) began his journey to the spirit world in the early morning hours of July 17, 2022. Keaton was born on October 1, 1988 to Duane and Laurel Vermillion. The baby of the family, and only boy, he immediately captured the hearts of his parents and sisters with his big dimples and mischievous smile. He grew up in the country near Kenel before he and his family moved to McLaughlin in 1991. He attended school in McLaughlin before earning his GED in June of 2006.
As a little boy, Keaton’s curious nature was forever getting him into trouble. He lived without fear and as a result, was constantly full of bumps and scrapes. His parents would chew him out, bandage him up, and out the door he’d go to find his next adventure! Keaton’s curious nature evolved into a love of restoration. Although he held various jobs such as gravel crushing and flooring with his Uncle Tony, his passion was “picking” and collecting. Much to the dismay of his mother, he was forever bringing home old and broken things. He loved working on these pieces, fixing them, cleaning them up and selling or trading them. Keaton believed deeply in the Native American culture and was extremely proud of his children attending the Lakota Language Immersion Nest. Keaton was determined to live his life on his own terms, completely uninterested in following anyone else’s footsteps. He loved his family and friends fiercely and would protect them at all cost. Keaton was a devoted son, brother, father, “unk” and friend. He will be deeply missed.
Keaton is survived by his parents, Duane and Laurel Vermillion; sisters, Tanzy Vermillion and Crystal (Ivan) Vermillion; children, A’Kila Jenae Monique and Krome Matho’; nieces, Jada and McKenna Vetter; nephews, Xander Vetter and Xavion Cadotte; uncles, Henry Scott Martin and Anthony Vermillion; aunts, Judi (Cordell) Yellow Fat and Paula (James) Gayton; Hunka aunt, Rose Long Chase; and his girlfriend, Gracie Yellow Earrings.
Welcoming him to heaven were his grandparents, Jerome and Lorraine Vermillion, Henry and Elsie Martin; and special cousin Joe Paul Yellow Fat.
