Evelyn M. Dutt, 97, Tolstoy, SD, died Friday, July 22, 2022 at the Bowdle Nursing Home.
Evelyn Marie Amsden, daughter of Bertha (Totzke) and George Amsden, was born March 26, 1925 at Andover, SD. She was brought up on a farm SW of Groton, SD. Her formal education consisted of country school, Groton High School (Class of 1943) and Northern Normal in Aberdeen, SD where she earned her teaching degree. She taught in Willow Lake, SD for one year and then continued her teaching career at the Tolstoy School. Evelyn married Otto Dutt at Groton on June 29, 1947. In 1951, after living on a farm east of Tolstoy, they settled in town. The Dutts owned and operated a well repair business for many years. Evelyn also kept busy with her five children, worked as a PMR (Post Master Relief) at the Tolstoy Post Office, and wrote Tolstoy Topics for the Hoven Review. Otto died July 4, 2006 and Evelyn continued living in Tolstoy until 2021 when she relocated to the Bowdle Nursing Home. She was a member of the Tolstoy United Methodist Church and the UMW, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Hoven Legion Auxiliary, and was a Potter County 4-H leader. Evelyn was a great reader, enjoyed gardening, and baked the best cookies and peach dumplings. She attended hundreds of athletic events that her family was involved in.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, July 29, 2022 at the Tolstoy United Methodist Church led by Pastor Seth Duncan. Interment follows at the German Zion Congregational Cemetery, Tolstoy. Pianist will be Elaine Snow, organist will be Vickie McQuarie and the congregation will sing “Blessed Assurance” and “Amazing Grace, How Sweet the Sound”. Evelyn’s grandson Steve and Rebecca Trefz will sing “Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior”. Ushers will be Vern Snow and Jeff Stoecker.
Visitation begins 10:00 AM Thursday at Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle, with a 7:00 PM prayer service led by Steve and Rebecca Trefz.
Evelyn is survived by two sons—Chris Dutt of Tolstoy and Scott (Shizue) Dutt of Winner, SD; two daughters—Nancy Trefz of Onaka, SD and Susan Dutt of Tolstoy; one brother, George (Scottie) Amsden, Jr. of Casper, WY; two sisters—Gayle Carmine of Bellevue, NE and Georgia Ann Riehle of Douglas, WY; five grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and two great, great grandchildren.
In addition to Otto, she was preceded in death by her father, George, on December 16, 1964; her mother, Bertha, on November 1, 1970; two sons, Charlie and Peter (In infancy); two sisters (Lois Larson and Carol Morvee); and a son-in-law, Larry Trefz.
Casketbearers will be Morgan Trefz of Morris, MN; Carter Trefz of Moffit, ND; Isaac Trefz of Onaka; Marshall Johnson and Noah Johnson of Miller, SD: and Nick Raab of Harrisburg, SD.
Evelyn’s funeral will be livestreamed at the Lien Family Funeral Care Facebook page and be available at this website Saturday night.
