Funeral services for Yvonne M. Ehlers, 89, of Presho, SD will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2022, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho, SD with burial in the Holy Angels Catholic Cemetery at Presho, SD. Visitation will begin at 5:00 p.m. with a scripture service at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Presho.
Yvonne Martha Vavra was born December 29, 1932, at Winnebago, NE to Fred and Marie (Wagner) Vavra. Around the age of six, Yvonne and her family moved to the Presho area where she attended country school with her ten siblings. She graduated from Presho High School before attending Wessington Springs Teaching School where she received her teaching permit. She then taught at rural schools in the Presho area.
On May 5, 1956, Yvonne was united in marriage to Alfred “Port” Urban. To this union, two children were born Gary and Glenda. She stayed home raising her children and helping with the farm, you could find her and the kids on the tractor mowing hay. Port passed away on June 18, 1976.
On November 20, 1981, Yvonne was united in marriage to Walter Ehlers. During their time, she enjoyed bringing lunch to the field and in their spare time, they enjoyed fishing on the river. She spent many years caring for Walt until he passed away on November 18, 1997.
Yvonne loved spending time with and cooking for her family. She was famous for baking caramel rolls, lasagna, and making her refrigerator pickles. During her younger years, she enjoyed summers camping at the farm, tending her chickens, feeding bottle calves, gardening, and going for coffee with friends. One of her favorite pastimes was taking her grandchildren for ice cream. In her later years, she continued to garden, play cards with friends, and loved embroidering and hand quilting. She made many quilts for her family and church.
Yvonne passed away on August 4, 2022, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD at the age of 89 years. Gratefully sharing her life are her son Gary (Maxine) Urban of Presho, SD; daughter Glenda (Kenneth) Marks of Pierre, SD; four grandchildren Terri (Jordon) Brakke, Laura (Travis) Homan, Chad (Bethany) Urban, and Kara (Chris) Lammers; eleven great-grandchildren Carson Brakke, Kirstin, Hannah, Gracelyn and Harrison Homan, Brooklyn, Logan, and Dylan Urban, and Maya, Macy, and Ruby Lammers; brother Lyle (Lorraine) Vavra of Westminster, CA; two sisters Alva Johnson of Minneapolis, MN and Kathryn Eichstadt of Presho, SD; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, both husbands Alfred and Walter, five brothers Sam “Sonny”, Ben, Richard, Ilo “Ziggy”, and Lowell, two sisters Loretta and Marie, and a great-grandchild Spencer Lammers.
