Daryl G. Zahn, 73, of Pierre, passed away August 7, 2022. A Celebration of Life Open House will begin with a Prayer Service at 10:00am, Saturday, August 13, 2022 at the Pat Duffy Community & Youth Involved Center in Fort Pierre.
Daryl Gene Zahn was born November 25, 1948 to Daniel and Audrey (Martin) Zahn in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He was the oldest of seven children growing up on the homestead where he established his dedicated work ethic. He attended country school and graduated from Forbes High School in 1966.
Daryl ventured into the rodeo circuit as a bull rider and graduated from Valley City with a degree in teaching in 1972. He moved to Wood, South Dakota where he taught history and shop class, and became part of the community helping local ranchers and guiding hunters for many years.
Daryl relocated to Fort Pierre, South Dakota where he married Sharon Hutcheson. There he shared in raising her daughters, Toni and Terri, and was then blessed with a daughter, Daralynn “CeCe” in 1978. He later married Wendy O’Day and raised her two children, Jessica and Josh, as his own.
When Daryl wasn’t working construction, you could find him hunting, fishing, drinking coffee, playing cards, or bullshitting with his friends. He had a personality like no other and a nickname for almost everyone. He was a man that once you met him, you never forgot him and you probably have stories to tell from it. He was ornery, stubborn and liked to tease people, but had a big heart.
His skills and expertise at hunting gained him respect and admiration of many while developing life long friendships as Daryl’s love and laughter tickled many souls.
He spent the last several years with significant other, Tammy McCullough, where he was close with her daughter, Amanda and her children.
Daryl is survived by his children, Daralynn “CeCe”, Toni, Terri, Jessica, and Josh; siblings, Carol, Wayne, Daniel “Buster”, Doug, Peggy, and Rhanda; significant other Tammy and her daughter Amanda, along with several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Daryl was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
