APRIL 19, 2023:
The City of Fort Pierre is cracking down on vacation rentals.
AirBnB or Vrbo type rentals are not allowed in residential areas, but a group of town residents came to this week’s Fort Pierre City Council meeting (April 17, 2023) to complain about one operating in their neighborhood.
Currently, Mayor Gloria Hanson and Public Works Director Rick Hahn say there are no licensed vacation rentals in Fort Pierre, so there shouldn’t be any listed– anywhere.
Hanson and Hahn appreciated that the concerned citizens brought the issue to the Council’s attention.
One person asked how city officials resolve the issue of an unlicensed vacation rental, prompting this exchange.
While not allowed in residential areas, Fort Pierre city ordinances do permit properly licensed vacation rentals in four zoning districts: General Commercial, Highway Commercial, Park/Riverfront/Fairground and Planned Development.

OCTOBER 19, 2022:
After an hour long discussion during this week’s meeting (Oct. 17, 2022), the Fort Pierre City Council has approved two ordinances regulating vacation rentals.
Currently, AirBnB or Vrbo type rentals are not allowed at all within Fort Pierre City limits.
Public works director Rick Hahn says the ordinances allow the rentals in four zoning districts: General Commercial, Highway Commercial, Park/Riverfront/Fairground and Planned Development districts.
Hahn says one factor in establishing ordinances for vacation rentals is a recent housing study for Fort Pierre and Pierre shows an extreme shortages of available housing.
Rachel Olson has been a realtor in the Fort Pierre area for over 16 years. She spoke against the proposed ordinances.
Fort Pierre resident Austin Goss thinks the ordinances are more complicated than they need to be.
Because the Fort Pierre City Council approved the ordinances, vacation rentals are now permitted as long as they meet all requirements.

OCTOBER 17, 2022:
Fort Pierre is holding another public hearing this evening (Oct. 17, 2022) on the town’s two proposed ordinances governing vacation rentals.
Mayor Gloria Hanson says there’s been a lot of interest in AirBnB or Vrbo type rentals in Fort Pierre.
Hanson says the proposed ordinances would allow vacation rentals in any zoning district that is not residential.
Hanson says the Planning and Zoning Board, the Council and city staff have all put in a lot of time and research hoping to come up with a solid plan.
The Fort Pierre City Council begins at 6:30pm CT at the South Dakota Municipal League meeting room (208 Island Drive) in Fort Pierre.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2022:

Hahn says the vacation rentals also need to adhere to applicable state laws.

JULY 23, 2021:
The Fort Pierre City Council has been working on city ordinances to regulate where vacation rental properties would– and would not– be allowed within city limits.
But, after holding public hearings, mayor Gloria Hanson says they’re reconsidering how to go about regulating such properties.
Public works director Rick Hahn says they’re looking at doing something similar to what Deadwood does regarding vacation rentals.
Hanson says city officials want to allow vacation rentals, but they need to be in appropriate locations.
Hahn says there are locations in Fort Pierre that would be well suited for being a vacation rental.
The Fort Pierre City Council will take the vacation rental issue up again at a future meeting, but no specific date has been set.
.
JUNE 23, 2021:
The Fort Pierre City Council will hold a public hearing July 6 on a proposed ordinance governing vacation rentals within city limits.
Public works director Rick Hahn says Fort Pierre’s current ordinances do not allow homes to be used as vacation rentals.
Hahn says the proposed ordinance (1050) parallels state law.
Hahn says the city will be monitoring the vacation rentals.
Hahn says vacation home rentals will have to be inspected by both the state and the city of Fort Pierre.
