HERREID – Brenden Begeman continued his domination Friday, and that’s mainly why Herreid/Selby Area has made another championship game.
Begeman rushed for 322 yards and five touchdowns as Herreid/Selby Area stopped Irene-Wakonda 62-30 in a 9B semifinal game.
Begeman, who has rushed for well over 2,000 yards in his senior season, scored on a 65-yard touchdown run with only 17 seconds elapsed, then a Trevor Gill fumble return touchdown just over midway through the first quarter gave H/SA a 16-0 lead.
After an Irene-Wakonda turnover, Tray Hettick scored on a 34-yard run and Begeman ran another touchdown in from nine yards with over a minute left in a 32-point first quarter for the Wolverines (11-0).
Irene-Wakonda (5-6) had won road games at Corsica-Stickney and Sully Buttes to advance to the semifinal.
Herreid/Selby Area will play fellow unbeaten team Hitchcock-Tulare on Thursday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion in the Wolverines’ third championship game in the last four seasons. Coverage will begin at 10:30 AM Thursday with KC Meiners on 100.7 KMLO, the KMLO page at the DRG News app and drgnews.com/kmlo.
