Bernadine L. Dupris, 71, of Red Scaffold, passed away Sunday, November 20, 2022, at Cheyenne River Health Center, Eagle Butte.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. MST, Friday, December 2, 2022, at the Red Scaffold Gym. Burial will follow at the Dupris Family Cemetery, rural Eagle Butte. A wake service will be 7:00 p.m. MST, Thursday, December 1, 2022, at the gym with a procession from the hill two miles west of town at 4:00 p.m.
Bernadine Lucille In Amongst was born at Frazier, South Dakota to Marvin and Dolly (War Bonnet) In Amongst on September 4, 1951. To this union was born Kenneth War Bonnet, Sara In Amongst, and Bernadine In Amongst. The family lived at Frazier along with their grandparents, Bill and Edith War Bonnet until the death of their parents at a young age. Bernadine and her siblings were then raised and cared for by their grandparents. She grew up on the War Bonnet Ranch located six miles east of Red Scaffold, SD.
Bernadine grew up in the country and enjoyed the lifestyle of the ranch. She had a tough life but enjoyed learning, working, and making memories alongside her grandpa, brother, and other family.
Bernadine attended Red Scaffold Day School throughout her younger years and attended Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School. She participated in track and field, kept up on her studies and worked weekends on her grandparents’ ranch.
Bernadine graduated from Cheyenne Eagle Butte High School in 1969. After high school, she met Percy Dupris Jr. They were married on March 8, 1971. To this union five children were born: Dawn, Kenric, Andrea, Mora and William. They also adopted one daughter, Marlayna McGinnis. Along with being a wife and mother, Bernadine attended Cheyenne River Community College, Black Hills State University, Presentation College, Capital University Center, and Northern State University. She graduated with her Associates of Arts Degree in December 1980.
After college, she worked as a secretary for the Cherry Creek Day School until 1989. She then found work at the Takini School, where she worked numerous years as an administrative secretary. She held many jobs in her lifetime including Cheyenne River Gas Company, CRST Chairman’s Office, and the CRST Land Buy Back Program. Her most recent employment was with the CRST Elderly Support Program until the time of her passing. Bernadine served on the Tri-Community Development Board of Directors as the treasurer and the Takini School Advisory Board.
Bernadine lived for and loved her children and grandchildren. She was always on the go, helping with and attending sports and other activities the kids were involved in. She helped raise and guide many nieces and nephews like they were her own, never turning away anyone that needed her help or advice.
She will be greatly missed by her family and the friends that she made along the way. All that knew her were truly blessed to have had her in their lives.
Bernadine’s life will be cherished by her daughters: Dawn, Andrea, and Mora Dupris; sons: Kenric (Charity) and William Dupris; sister, Inez Iron Hawk; brother, Manny (Renee) Iron Hawk; nephews: Riley Red Horse, Laki Toki, and Carl and Marques Iron Hawk; nieces: Katrina Martinez, Misty Hernandez, Irini Iron Hawk, Claudia Iron Hawk, Ricki White Wolf, Kim White Wolf, Tracy Dupris-Lana, Aubrey Walters, LeRay Brings Plenty, Brittney Brewer, and Miley and Angel Charging Cloud; granddaughters: Cadyn Dupris, MacKenzie (Brandon) Stout, Lakota Cloud Eagle, Maria Morales, Payge Dupris, and Calynn Knife; grandsons: Cayde and Coltyn Dupris, Antawn Dupris, Ashton Cloud Eagle, Percy Dupris III, Coy and Clinton Knife, Clayton Gunville, D’Marcus Brings Plenty, Ron Hernandez, Lance Martinez, Phil and Jordan Knife, and Trecyn Charging Cloud; great grandchildren: Juniper Traversie, Araylla Brings Plenty, Scarlett and Charlotte Knife, Boston Kingsley Clown, Kohen Dupris, Asa and Peyton Knife, Shelby, Jazmyne, Noah, Adam, James, and Anjali Knife, Memphis and Elijah Brewer, and Teo White Wolf; and family pets: Peanut, Nellie, Peppa, Tabbi, Pups, Biskee, Bibble, Luna, and Chief.
Bernadine was preceded in death by her parents: Marvin and Dolly In Amongst; husband: Percy Dupris Jr.; brother, Kenneth War Bonnet; sister, Sara In Amongst; grandparents: Bill and Edith War Bonnet; nephew, Jim High Elk; nieces: Kelli High Elk and Lavani Toki; and an uncle, Francis Charging Cloud.
