Mary Lorraine DeWitt was born November 27, 1935 to Ben Ash DeWitt and Lenora (Blackbird) DeWitt at North Iron Nation, SD. She was raised in Reliance and Lower Brule. She attended St. Mary’s Espocial Girls School.
On November 10, 1955, she was united in marriage to Nathan Middletent and to that union eight children were born: Ben, Dale, Darrell, Denise, Marletta, Keith, Terry, and Mavis and three Hunka sons Brad Bacon, Bart Ness, and LeRoy Choal.
She ran a daycare and spent most of her career for Lower Brule Sioux Tribe at C.H.R. from August 1987 to September of 2018.
She was united in marriage to Edward Shields on August 31, 1990.
Mary loved going to her grandchildren’s sporting events, rodeos, and was very active in her church. She loved sitting on her deck with her coffee watching everyone go by and her beloved dog Tipsey.
Mary opened her house up to everyone and always had a big pot of soup going. She was very outspoken and would tell you like it was.
Mary was loved by so many. She always knew how to brighten someone’s day and make them feel loved. She treated everyone with kindness and respect. She rarely got mad and when she did, she had a darn good reason. Her outlook on life was inspiring. If you were lucky enough to spend more than five minutes in her presence you were forever changed.
Mary entered the Spirit World on December 2, 2022 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain at the age of 87 years. Gratefully sharing her life are her children Dale, Darrell (Dawn), Denise (Fay), Marletta (Bob), Terry, and Mavis; her sister Sharon (Gary); 33 grandchildren; 79 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; three hunka sons Brad Bacon, Bart Ness, and LeRoy Choal; and many nieces, nephews, and family.
Preceding her in death were her parents Ben and Lenora DeWitt, husbands Nathan and Edward; son and his wife Ben and Martina Middletent; daughter-in-law Robin LaRoche Middletent; son Keith; great granddaughter Ronette; great grandson Ethan Middletent; sisters Beth, Grace, Darlene, Etta, and Carol; and brothers Benny, Truman, Tony, Marvin, Charles, Lawrence, and Clarence.
