John Bothwell, 81, of Pierre, SD, died Sunday, December 25, 2022 at Avantara Nursing Home in Pierre.
Funeral service will be 11:00am on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at Isburg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Nance Orsbon. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Sansarc Cemetery.
John “Johnny” Edward Bothwell was born on December 13, 1941 to Henry and Dorothy Bothwell in New Buffalo, Pennsylvania. He had one brother, Chuck Bothwell born 16 years later. At the young age of ten John rode the train from Pennsylvania to Huron, SD in the summers to work on his grandmother’s farm west of Virgil, SD. His mother packed him sandwiches to eat on the way, and saved his money to buy a horse.
In 1960 he married Mary Ann Zepp in Maryland. To this union three sons were born, Steve, twins Thad and Shane. In 1963 they moved from PA to the Barrick Ranch northwest of Ft. Pierre, and worked for Roy Lathem until 1969. They then bought his grandmother’s farm west of Virgil, SD. In 1979 he sold the farm and moved back to the Barrick Ranch and worked for Tommy Hickman until 2002 when the ranch was sold. He then went to work for Evergreen Caissons in Colorado in the fall and winter. In the spring and summer, he returned to SD and did custom haying and worked at the campground in Wall, SD, in 2007 he retired and settled in Fort Pierre.
In 2009 he married Lenette Oldfield and gained two step-daughters, Jeanie and Joanie.
John is survived by his wife, Lenette; brother, Chuck; three sons, Steve, Thad and Shane (Darleen; step-daughters, Jeanie (Lorne) King and Joanie Oldfield; nephew, Mathew (Katelyn) Bothwell and their children, Samuel and Jonathan. Grandchildren, Dayton (Jodi) Bothwell, Macy Hunsley, Chance (Tanner) Prince, Rhett (Hailey) Bothwell, Tanner and Taylor Bothwell and step-grandchildren, Judd and Allison King, and Talon Duncan. Great-grandchildren, Brendon and Ryan Bothwell and Audree and Bentley Prince.
John was proceeded in death by his mother and father, his wife Mary Ann, and his daughter-in-law, Robyn Bothwell.
