Gordon Quaschnick, 84, of Herreid passed away Monday, December 12, 2022, at the Walworth County Care Center in Selby. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at the Herreid Baptist Church in Herreid, SD. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 beginning at 5:00 pm with a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm. Interment under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Herreid.
Gordon Russell Quaschnick was born to Edward and Rose (Bickel) Quaschnick on January 9, 1938 at Eureka, SD. Gordon grew up on the family farm Northeast of Herreid. He attended the Bickel Country School through the fourth grade, graduating from Herreid High School in 1957. Gordon attended Northern State College at Aberdeen, SD then transferred to Southern State College at Springfield, SD graduating with a carpentry degree. During his high school years, he worked for Fred Bauer doing carpentry work during the summer, after graduation he continued working with Bauer on a full-time basis.
On March 18, 1960 Gordon was united in marriage to Dianna J. Kost at the Herreid Baptist Church. Gordon enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1960 receiving an honorable discharge from the US Army Reserves in 1966. During his tour with the National Guard his unit was called to active duty and was stationed at Fort Polk, LA. Following his tour of duty, he continued working for Bauer until 1967 when he began working for Ruben Scherle Sales as concrete construction foreman. In 1976 he began his own construction business and also established Quaschnick Soft Water. In 1999 he retired and sold the Quaschnick Soft Water business to his daughter and son-in-law Wanda and Steve Berndt.
Gordon became a member of the Herreid Baptist Church January 6,1952 where he served as Trustee & Usher over the years. He served on the Herreid City Council for many years and as Mayor from 2002 to 2009. Gordon enjoyed serving the community. He was a volunteer Fireman for 25 years, he was a member of the Herreid Jaycees, the Herreid Area Boosters, Herreid Economic Development, Herreid Senior Citizens, a life-time member of the Campbell County Wildlife Club and he was instrumental in establishing the Campbell County Transit Service and drove the bus for a number of years. He also served on the Strasburg Nursing Home Board and the WEB Water Board.
Gordon loved traveling, fishing at Lake Oahe, and having coffee with friends.
Gordon entered the Walworth County Care Center of Selby, SD on December 15, 2016 where he passed away on December 12, 2022.
He is survived by his wife Dianna. Two children Wanda (Steven) Berndt of Herreid and Kirk (Sonja) Quaschnick of Frisco, TX. Seven grandchildren Nicholas (Jessica) Berndt, Jennifer (Shawn) Rhoden, Jordan, Jeremy and Jonah Quaschnick, Alexandra (Andy) Gale and Mikaela Baker also five great grandchildren Maverick and Gabriel Berndt; Emily, Jacob and Aurora Rhoden, Brothers-in-Law Merle (Betty) Kost, Jerome (Joyce) Pfeiffer of Aberdeen, SD, sisters-in-law Mavis Knoepfle and Arley Trautman of Eureka, SD and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Walter (Jane/Deloris) and three sisters Irene (Art) Wacker, Ruby (Ervin) Goehring and Berniece (Edwin) Goehring. Brothers-in-Law Leslie Knoepfle and Bennie Trautman and Sister-in-law Della (LeRoy) Kary.
