Michael (Mike) Patrick Schreiber, 58, of Oacoma SD., passed away January 15, 2023, at the University of Minnesota Fairview, after a three-year battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Mike was grateful to have received a double lung transplant on February 23, 2022. During the past 11 months, he battled many infections, and other complications of the transplant, but never gave up fighting.
Mike was born at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. on February 22, 1964, to Russell Schreiber and Bonnie (Trottochaud-Schreiber) Ebneter. Mike attended elementary school in Sioux Falls, SD, and later moved to Brandon, SD., where he graduated in 1982. Mike was an athlete and still holds the high jump record of 6’9”, at Brandon Valley High School, a feat of which he was very proud. After graduation, Mike attended University of South Dakota in Vermillion, graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice. He spent years employed in Juvenile Corrections. He began his career in 1987 at Chamberlain’s MRADC and continued work there through many name changes; Chamberlain Academy, YSI, and worked for Pinnacle Programs. Mike worked his way up from Youth Supervisor to the Director of the facility. He loved working with youth and felt he could truly make a difference in their lives. Mike also was instrumental in developing Pathfinder Lodge in Fort Thompson, where he was also the Director.
Mike was most recently employed by Sanford Equip in Chamberlain, SD. When Mike’s health declined, he was forced to leave this position in May of 2021.
Mike’s favorite job was guiding hunters for Derek Long, End of the Road Hunts. He had a passion for hunting and truly loved guiding, meeting people, and being outdoors. He spent many years guiding, and always said, there was no such thing as a bad day of hunting. He made many friends over the years, either hunting pheasants, hunting deer in Phillip, SD, or hunting grouse with Bill Adams, Leroy Choal, Jeff Pederson, and Rick Palmer.
Mike was also a member of the Oacoma Town Board over the years, beginning with the Zoning Board, then was later appointed as Board Chairman (Mayor), a position of which he held for many years. He felt it was very important to be involved in his community and was instrumental in many projects such as the Arrowwood Resort (Cedar Shore) Project, the Oacoma Community Center Project, Oacoma Street project, and many more, too numerous to mention.
Mike married Jill Wendell in Sioux Falls, SD, on June 17, 1989. They welcomed their first child in July of 1990, Cody, and daughter Shelby, in December or 1994. Mike enjoyed teaching his children to hunt, fish and enjoy the outdoors. He also spent many hours on bleachers, following them throughout their school years in sports, and performing arts. He was a very proud father, and grandfather. His grandchildren were the light of his life.
Mike is survived by his wife of 33 years, son Cody (Maddy) Schreiber, Briggs, and Cooper, of Rapid City; Shelby (Zack) Gillette, Beauden, of Sioux Falls, SD.; Father, Russell (Lola) Schreiber, of Scottsdale, AZ, ; Step Father, Gene Ebneter , of Yankton, SD ; Sisters, Susan Schreiber , of Yankton, SD , and Cathi (Eric) Rude, Sydney, of Billing, Mt.
