Jim Speck was born December 14, 1953, to Marvin and Donna (Sievers) Speck in Faulkton. He attended the Faulkton Area School District for 14 years. Yes, there’s a bonus year in there, which allowed him to join his buddy Marv Hutchinson’s class. During his years at FHS, Jim excelled at many sports. He loved to share the details of tournaments and matches as he recalled them with family and friends. Boxing was an extracurricular sport that became a passion of Jim’s. Some would say he was a bit of a legend around here.
After graduation in 1973 Jim proudly purchased J&J Bar, aka the Pool Hall, which he co-owned until 2011. He continued to be employed there until his passing. That’s 50 years of fond memories and cherished friendships.
Jim was untied in marriage to Peggy Hutchinson in 1986. Together they raised three children, Ashley (Bryan) Schmidt, Rocky (Kaylee Beidler) Speck, and Colby Speck (Bethany Kneifl).
Jim has six grandchildren: Ethan, Evan, Dawsyn, and Tyson Schmidt, Maverick and Piper Speck.
Jim loved hunting, collecting antiques, snowmobiling, and working in his garden. His favorite days in the garden were when family and friends joined him there, especially Brice and Nicole Cunningham. His grandsons referred to it as Potato Mountain.
Lake Faulkton became Jim’s home in 2012, he enjoyed all seasons there and looked forward to friends and family stopping by for a cold one. He especially looked forward to his brother-in-law Greg’s weeklong visits each year.
Jim was a proud lifetime member of the NRA, a very active member of the local snowmobile club, and the Faulk County Trap Club. He belonged to the J&J bowling & dart teams for many years. Jim was recently honored for his many years of service on the Faulkton Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his children; grandchildren; bonus “son”, Brice (Nicole) Cunningham; brothers: Chuck (Mary) Speck, David Speck, and Steve (Denise) Speck; beloved sister, Lori (Greg) Verjan; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; and nephew, Travis Speck.
Per Jim’s wishes, a memorial trapshoot will be held at the Faulk County Trap Club this spring. Details will be shared via Facebook.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton has been entrusted with Jim’s arrangements.
