Marcia Elaine Peterson was born on May 4, 1953 to Lyle and Leola (Schaefer) Peterson in Chamberlain, SD. She passed away in Sioux Falls, SD on January 29, 2023
Marcia attended grade school in Lower Brule and high school in Reliance, but she graduated from Alliance, NE high school in 1970. After spending time in California, she attended nursing school in Alliance, NE and obtained her LPN license. She worked in private care and nursing homes for a few years. After her son Darrin was born in 1975, she lived in Lower Brule and eventually moved to Kennebec. She fostered children for a couple of years and felt like they were her own kid and formed many lifelong relationships with them. When the Lower Brule Golden Buffalo Casino opened, she started working there. She was the cook and retired in 2022 after many years.
Marcia was well known for many things. She made 100’s of decorated cakes for special occasions. She made it a point to deliver goodies to the elderly in Lower Brule which usually contained her signature caramel puff corn and banana breads. Marcia would also make sure to deliver fresh sweet corn and vegetables to those would could not get out due to health reasons. She never forgot a face and would always say hello and visit. Marcia never forgot a birthday. She always made a point to call family and friends and sing “Happy Birthday” to them. Her family celebrated each week with a family meal that often included close friends.
After her father got ill, she started staying at the Peterson Rand helping take care of him and continued to live there until her passing. Marcia took pride in keeping the cattle records up to date and giving vaccinations at the brandings. Her family thinks she had a name for each cow and could tell you their lineage back to the 1960’s.
Marcia like to play cards, gambling, cooking, crocheting and doing word search puzzles. She made many afghans over the last couple years, gifting them to others. She was a proud member of the Legion Post 179 Auxiliary all her life and could be found handing out poppies and decorating cemeteries on Memorial Day. She played host to many nieces and nephews over the summers months and left them with a lifetime of memories they cherish.
Marcia is survived by her son Darrin Peterson, grandsons Garrett and Trenton (Natasha) Peterson and great grandchildren Noah and Norah. She also considered Elaine Johnson Olson as her daughter.
