While working in Pierre she met the love of her life, Russell “Sonny” Carter. They were married for 48 years.
Ellen enjoyed the simple things in life. She loved her flower garden and growing tomatoes and other vegetables in her garden. She enjoyed yearly trips to Iroquois where her family would get together on the family farm. Every Sunday she and Russell would go for Sunday drives to see the countryside. One of her favorite spots to hang out was the farm owned by her in-laws, Dick and Mary Carter. She loved spending time out there in the country where she could watch the pheasants, deer, and other animals. Over the years she had two dogs and two cats that she loved and cared for until they passed. She always made sure the birds had feed in the bird feeders so she could watch the various kinds that came in to eat.
