Steven Dwight Stewart was born November 30, 1956, in Volga, SD to Bert and Donna (McGarvie) Stewart. Steve attended school in De Smet, SD and graduated from De Smet High School in 1975. After high school, Steve served with the South Dakota National Guard before being honorably discharged in 1981. He later attended Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1987.
He met his soulmate, Ronette, in 1979. Stooge and Blanche as they affectionately called each other, made their family complete with children Sarah and John. Steve was the rock of the Stewart household and he could always be counted on to ensure the family home was filled with love and support, regardless of circumstances.
Steve held various jobs throughout his life, but his true calling came in 1987 when he began working for the Division of Rehabilitation Services with the State of South Dakota as a Rehabilitation Engineer. He proudly served the citizens of South Dakota for 30 years, retiring in 2017.
As a person always willing to help others, Steve was always visible in the community. Throughout his life, Steve served as a Cub Scout leader, Sunday School teacher, after school program volunteer, Special Olympics volunteer, Community Banquet volunteer, and a participant in other community events too numerous to mention. Steve also served on several councils, boards, and commissions both while working for the state and after he retired.
Steve was never one to be bored. He could often be found working in his garage, talking to family on his HAM radio, and playing with the many pets that surrounded his home throughout his life. When his oldest granddaughter Schelbie developed an interest in NASCAR, Steve did too. He would spend countless hours talking with family members about NASCAR and cheering on his favorite driver, Kyle Busch.
Steve had many obstacles in life to overcome and had many reasons for which he could have been sad or angry. Instead, Steve developed a love for the yellow smiley face and could always be found with a smile on his face and delivering his famous laugh.
Those left to remember him include his loving wife Ronette Stewart of Fort Pierre, children Sarah (Lance) DeHaai, son John Stewart, grandchildren Schelbie, Aubrey, Tanner, and Bennett DeHaai, mother Donna Stewart, sisters Karen Brown and Susan Stewart, sister-in-law Vicki Fields, father-in-law Ron Blachford, brother-in-law Jason (Jenny) Blachford, special friend and neighbor Karen Williams, and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
