Teton K. Cook, 31, of Eagle Butte, passed away Friday, March 3, 2023, at his home in Eagle Butte. Burial will take place in the Ducheneaux Family Cemetery, Swiftbird.
Teton Keith Cook was born February 22, 1992, in Killeen, TX to Drury Cook and Quincee Ducheneaux.
Teton was known as a caring friend, loyal relative and artistic comedian to all. From the time he was a young boy, he took on the “Ciye” role for all his cousins, like Stetson, Blake, Tre, Taran, Talon, Lakota and so many others, protecting and guiding them as best he could.
A grandpa’s boy at heart, Teton often emulated his grandfather Greg Ducheneaux as he took the fatherly role in his life, going as far as to making himself need glasses from using his grandpa’s prescription lenses to “look cool” as a kid. He often lived with him and his mother Quincee in Swiftbird, and then LaPlant, South Dakota, graduating high school from Tiospaye Topa School, another community within CRST where he was beloved.
Ever the artist, musician and performer, Teton went on to spend some years at United Tribes Technical College, where he studied art for a while. He eventually ended up in places like the
Black Hills, where he got to live out his troubadour dreams in the sacred lands of the Paha Sapa, having already played several performances in his youth at the “Toe Jam”. Teton was always
known for his covers and personally crafted songs on guitar, having also influenced several younger cousins to do the same. In 2017, he recorded his debut solo EP “In My Mind”, taking on
the ancestral name, Crow Feather, engineered by Cousin Talon which is still available online for free. Teton, Hanski, while in pain, showed a lot of bright spirit to all he encountered. His strength was shown in his constant state of creativity through the hard times in life, and in his kindness to others, as well as his protective nature over those he cared deeply about. He lived simply, in an
“Ikce” way, and always worried about others before himself, showing us all how to be better relatives. His laugh, smile, jokes, and “Teton loves ya” attitude will forever be missed by his
family, friends, and the communities he touched.
Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Teton’s arrangements.
