Kathryn “Kay” Howard,82, of Blunt died on Wednesday, March 8th at Avantera in Pierre. The family will greet visitors from 5:00-6:00pm on Friday, April 21st at Isburg Funeral Chapel followed by a Prayer Service and Rosary at 6:00pm. A Memorial Mass will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, April 22nd at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pierre with burial to follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blunt. Refreshments and fellowship to follow at the Blunt Community Center. For those unable to attend the services they will be broadcast live on this page the day of the service.
Kathryn Archene (Seeman) Howard was born October 24, 1940 in Iroquois, SD to Archie and Kathryn (Rudy) Seeman. She was the youngest of three children. She attended school in Huron, SD and continued her education at South Dakota State University where she double majored in history and political science with a teaching certification. She met her future husband, Richard, in Brookings in 1960 at the Newman Center Halloween party when he playfully dunked her head into a tub of water while she was bobbing for apples. Their friendship became more serious as they continued spending time together with friends and participating in mutual activities such as choir.
Rick and Kay were married September 9, 1961 in Huron. They settled in Blunt where Kay would spend the next 61 years raising six children while substitute teaching, tending an extensive garden, and doing inventory and bookwork for Howard Bros. Hardware and Implement.
During their retirement years, Rick and Kay traveled extensively, both to see their children and grandchildren scattered around the world and to see all God’s wonders. Their travels took them to all seven continents. They spent the last 20 winters in Phoenix where Kay participated in various groups and enjoyed time with friends. She loved a good card game and could solve any crossword puzzle.
Kay was called home to be with her Savior on March 8, 2023.
Kay is survived by her husband Richard “Rick” of Blunt, SD; children David (Mary) Howard of Brandon, SD; Scott (Celeste) Howard of Alexandria, VA; Michelle Jones of Harrold, SD; Mark (Taffy) Howard of Rapid City, SD; Wendy (Mike) Haddock of Woodbridge, VA; Chris (Camille) Howard of Cheyenne, WY; 14 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Alvin and Maurice, her son-in-law Wade Jones, and her great-granddaughter Elizabeth Tessa Howard.
