MITCHELL – After being twice delayed, the Pierre Governors’ 2023 baseball season finally began Monday, but not how they desired.
Mitchell swept Pierre 6-4 and 5-0 in a doubleheader at Cadwell Park.
Seven walks by Governor pitchers and three errors cost Pierre in the first game, as Mitchell won despite having only two hits. Jack Merkwan drew a walk with the bases loaded and Jonny Lyons drove in a run with a fielder’s choice to tie the game in a two-run second before Mitchell scored two runs in each of the third and fourth innings. Lincoln Kienholz had an RBI triple in the fifth inning and Spencer Easland hit an RBI single in the sixth for Pierre.
A three-run first inning decided the second game early for Mitchell as the Governors were held to three hits, singles by George Stalley, Kienholz and Lyons.
