Gladys M. Hagny, 88, of Gettysburg, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Avera Oahe Manor, Gettysburg, with her daughters sleeping near her.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, with Pastor David Otten presiding. Burial will follow in the Gettysburg Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church.
Gladys Mae Walde was born May 1, 1934, at Denison IA to William and Lillian (Ruberg) Walde. She was baptized May 10, 1934. Gladys attended East Boyer #8 Country School and Denison High School.
On March 4, 1967, Gladys was united in marriage to Philip Hagny at Grace Lutheran Church, Denver, CO. They lived on their rural Gettysburg family farm and raised their family there. Philip and Gladys were blessed with one son and two daughters and were married for 53 years.
Gladys did administrative and other office work in Denver from 1952 until 1967.
Gladys was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Gettysburg. Throughout her life she enjoyed teaching Sunday school in Iowa, Denver, and at St. John’s in Agar. After that she led Bible study classes locally, making a total of over 57 years of leading classes.
Gladys enjoyed studying the Bible, quilting, watercolor painting, playing cards, and Scrabble. Gladys enjoyed traveling with her husband, and they took memorable trips to Russia, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, Mexico, and Canada.
Her life will be cherished by her children: Sara (Eric) French of Sioux Falls, SD, Emilie (Tony) Downs of Denver CO; three grandchildren: Edward, Jillian, and Miles French; one sister, Marilyn Yoakum, Russell IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Hagny; her son, Matthew Hagny; her parents; brothers: Walter, Raymond, Edward, Virgil, and Leonard; and sisters: Helen Hinze, Ruby Jahn, Wilma Walde, Lillian Fastenau, Marlene Brudenell, and LaDonna Walde.
Although she will be dearly missed, we are reassured that she is in heaven with Jesus, where we will see her again.
