Alma Rosina Ottenbacher, 94, Sioux Falls, SD, died Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at Avantara Norton in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Monday, May 15, 2023 at Zion American Lutheran Church, Eureka, SD, led by Pastor Ryan Gage. Interment follows at the Church Cemetery. Organist will be Carie Kappes and the Congregation will sing “In the Garden”, “Amazing Grace, how Sweet the Sound”, and “Just as I Am, Without One Plea”. Ushers will be Kevin Hoff and Connie Woehlhaff.
Visitation commences 12 noon Monday at the Church.
Alma Rosina, daughter of Elizabeth (Schneider) and Philip Rieger, was born at Wakpala, SD on June 18, 1928. The family moved quite often; however, Alma mainly was brought up west of Eureka. She attended rural school and after third grade entered the workforce. She helped at numerous farm homes. Alma married Adolph Ottenbacher at Hoffnungstahl Lutheran Church west of Eureka on April 13, 1947. They first settled and worked near Aberdeen, SD In 1949, they relocated to a farm near Artas, SD and in 1958 they settled at Adolph’s home place eight miles west of Eureka. In 1996, they moved to the Sioux Falls area. Alma endured many hardships in her life. She was a very strong person and hard worker. She was also very much loved. She was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening and, in retirement, did lots of craft work.

Alma is survived by two daughters—Linda (Jim) Olinger of Crooks, SD and Donna Schmahl of Aberdeen; two sisters-in-law—Ramona Ottenbacher of Eureka and Esther Ottenbacher of Aberdeen; four grandchildren—Melissa (Jeff) Bentz, Dawn Preszler, Andy (Janet) Schmahl, and Cory (Cassie) Olinger; and six great grandchildren—Justin (Sarah) Bentz, Kaylee Bentz, Aidan Preszler, Macayla Olinger, Tynlee Olinger, and Alexandria Olinger.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Adolph, on January 29, 1995; her father, Philip, on October 11, 1995; her mother, Elizabeth on January 15, 1977; one son, Floyd; one daughter, Mary Johnson; son-in-law, Adrian Schmahl; five brothers—Albert (Louella), August (Emma), Milton (Lillian), Richard (Mary Ellen), and Marvin (Sheyna); five sisters—Martha (Carl, Ruben) Ackerman, Gertrude (Herbert) Goehring, Viola (Alfred) Bending, Lorraine (Jim, Ed) Ackerman, and Delores (Marvin) Paulson; one Ottenbacher sister-in-law and seven Ottenbacher brothers-in-law.
Honorary bearers will be Alma’s Great Grandchildren.
Casketbearers will be grandsons-Cory and Andy; Great grandsons-Justin and Aidan; as well as Gordon Ottenbacher of Aberdeen and Clyde Ottenbacher of Eureka.
Services are in care of Lien-Straub-Carlsen Chapel of Eureka.
